European Integration and Migration Conference

On March 26, 2021, the conference on European Integration and Migration was held via Zoom at Atatürk University.

The conference has started with the opening speeches of Dr. Özgür Temiz and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülüm Özçelik.

In the first session, Dr. Esra Yıldız Üstün gave a speech titled “Internal Protection Alternative”.

Following that, Haşim Özcan, the director of Erzurum Immigration Office, gave a speech on the establishment, operation, and control of the Aşkale Repatriation Center in the context of Erzurum.

Then Sinem Bayram Dumludağ spoke about “Migration and Integration”.

In the second session, Prof. Dr. Sanem Baykal talked about Turkey-EU relations as regards the migration issues.

After that, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salimya Ganiyeva talked about “The Legal Effects of Turkish Immigration to European Countries within Turkish Law.”

Lastly, Dr. Bahar Küpe gave a speech on the “Temporary Protection Under the EU and Turkish Law”.

Finally, a Q&A session has been carried out. Overall it has been a very productive and fruitful conference! We hope to see you at other talks and conferences.

Talks on Migration (ToM) 5

The fifth of the Talks on Migration series took place on March 9, 2021, via Zoom.

Dr. Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm, Edinburgh Law School, was the keynote speaker of this session.

She has delivered a speech titled “Regional Migration Governance: Soft Law and the Diffusion of Policies on Integration and Inclusion”.

Dr. Abou-Nigm explained the context of South America while she has introduced regional governance of migrants. Also, she has highlighted that South America has the most developed instruments after the EU while she was diving into the details of intra-regional diffusion of national laws and implementation deficiencies.

Moreover, Dr. Abou-Nigm touched upon soft law’s role and its chances to narrow the implementation deficiencies.

At the end of her speech, a very fruitful Q&A session has been carried out, and the importance of public opinion in the social integration of migrants has been emphasized.
