The sixth of the Talks on Migration series took place on April 13, 2021, via Zoom.
Metin Çorabatır, President of IGAM, was the keynote speaker of this session.
Çorabatır has delivered a speech titled “1951 Refugee Convention-Reservations and Restrictions”.
Çorabatır highlighted the importance of the 1951 Refugee Convention by stating some statistics regarding migration. According to statistics, there are 80 million people who are replaced from their home country and 25 million refugees.
Çorabatır stated that the Convention is still valid and applicable to current needs thanks to its flexible nature while noting the opposite views in the doctrine and diplomacy.
Moreover, Çorabatır emphasized that the current international situation is not available to draft a brand-new convention; thus, he suggested holding onto this Convention and fully implementing it by the parties.
At the end of her speech, a very fruitful Q&A session has been carried out.
Thanks to all participants!
Till next time!
