The sixth of the Talks on Migration series took place on April 13, 2021, via Zoom.
Metin Çorabatır, President of IGAM, was the keynote speaker of this session.
Çorabatır has delivered a speech titled “1951 Refugee Convention-Reservations and Restrictions”.
Çorabatır highlighted the importance of the 1951 Refugee Convention by stating some statistics regarding migration. According to statistics, there are 80 million people who are replaced from their home country and 25 million refugees.
Çorabatır stated that the Convention is still valid and applicable to current needs thanks to its flexible nature while noting the opposite views in the doctrine and diplomacy.
Moreover, Çorabatır emphasized that the current international situation is not available to draft a brand-new convention; thus, he suggested holding onto this Convention and fully implementing it by the parties.
At the end of her speech, a very fruitful Q&A session has been carried out.
The fifth of the Talks on Migration series took place on March 9, 2021, via Zoom.
Dr. Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm, Edinburgh Law School, was the keynote speaker of this session.
She has delivered a speech titled “Regional Migration Governance: Soft Law and the Diffusion of Policies on Integration and Inclusion”.
Dr. Abou-Nigm explained the context of South America while she has introduced regional governance of migrants. Also, she has highlighted that South America has the most developed instruments after the EU while she was diving into the details of intra-regional diffusion of national laws and implementation deficiencies.
Moreover, Dr. Abou-Nigm touched upon soft law’s role and its chances to narrow the implementation deficiencies.
At the end of her speech, a very fruitful Q&A session has been carried out, and the importance of public opinion in the social integration of migrants has been emphasized.
The third session of the Talks on Migration Series organized by Jean Monnet Module on European and International Migration Law has been held online on October 15, 2020
Akif Atlı, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR), was the keynote speaker and he delivered a speech titled Refugees / Our Guests: Our Acquaintances and Differences During This Time.
It was a very productive talk with wide participation.
The talk covered a short summary of efforts for refugee protection in Turkey with specific references to legal basis, facts and social cohesion difficulties with a wide focus covering the society, government and international community’s contributions.
Specifically, Mr. Atlı shared the numbers and comparisons with other social facts, preparations of a refugee crisis and daily difficulties with unprecedented solution efforts.
While Mr. Atlı was highlighting that each and every individual that lives in the host country contribute to the protection of refugees, he explained that the protection of the refugees refers to the instance in which the refugees are able to access to fundamental human rights like non-refoulement, right to registration, right to education, right to health and right to work. In addition, Mr. Atlı stated that the refugees can only exercise their rights emerging from their temporary protection status in their place of domicile.
Mr. Atlı has pointed out that these rights bring some obligations along to refugees like informing local administrative organs relating to current changes and exercising rights within the procedural laws of the host country.
During his speech, Mr. Atlı has touched upon various difficulties that has arisen in the social cohesion of refugees. He pointed out that these difficulties can be handled though a healthy communication among governments, citizens and refugees.
At the end of his speech, a very fruitful Q&A session has been carried out.
